Blogging as an Advertising Tool

The new PR and article creation and distribution service, offered by Zero-One Design, has been quite a hit; there has been a lot of interest and the enquiries keep coming in. Along with these requests for press releases and articles, we have had questions about blogging.
You’ll remember from a previous article we posted about this service that we were discussing how businesses need to keep blogging? Well, a lot of calls have come in from business owners who have asked if we provide a blogging service too. They are saying that they have never blogged and are unsure how to start, some have a blog set up but just don’t have the time to keep on top of it. Can we help? The short answer is yes, we can.

The Writer in All of Us

The greatest thing the internet has achieved is the global communication and sharing of ideas it can facilitate. Since web logs or blogs were invented suddenly everyone is a writer, they can let the caged birds of their creativity fly! They say everyone has at least one novel in them; therefore, how many frustrated novelists must there have been out there? Blogs are a release for those frustrations, not all are particularly good and not all have much relevance to many other people, but the fact that they can express their hopes, fears and desires is enough for them. It’s a romantic view perhaps but there you go.

An overwhelming percentage of blogs are just for the above reasons and the authors find others who share their interests. Some are sad, some are funny (our favourite at the moment is www.bonesdiary.wordpress.com) but all have meaning for someone.

Then there are the business bloggers who use their blogs to inform and educate within their chosen niche. These bloggers aren’t writing to work out some pain they feel since their boyfriend/girlfriend etc. left them; they are advertising themselves.

Blogs are amazing tools for indirect advertising: say, for example, your company produces an electronic component for washing machines; you don’t write “Buy our washing machine parts”, rather you write an interesting and well-informed blog post about how washer-dryers have become so much more economical in the past ten years since the invention of….. Just an example, I’m no expert on washing machines but you get my point. Now, people who are building washing machines will read all this and think that you really know your subject, you must be the “go to guy”. Lo and behold at the bottom of this post is a link to your website, et voila!

Whatever industry you are involved in, whatever product or service you provide; use your blog to highlight topical news stories and give your opinion on them, include references to your firm and include links back to your website.

Build a following

You can be the greatest writer on any given subject but unless you have an audience then you are wasting your time. So how do you get an audience? They won’t just happen to find you, go out and find them. No matter what your niche is, others out there in the blogosphere are writing about it right now. Look for them, read what they are saying and comment on it, ask them a question, invite a response. There will be a link to your blog there and in many instances they will follow it out of curiosity. If they like what they find at your site they will talk about it to their audience, they might post a link to your blog if it compliments theirs, and you are posting links back to their site and discussing them.

Some bloggers in your niche might have huge followings and they could start filtering down to yours. Some invite guest bloggers, then you have the attention of their audience too, who will follow the link back to you. The most important thing to do is to keep writing, this new found audience may have a short attention span so if you go quiet for too long, they’ll go find someone else to follow.
Here’s the best bit: Google, easily the biggest and most influential search engine, not only reads your blogs, it has started indexing all these comments. What this means is the little search engine spiders we discussed before, are crawling over the comments you make on other blogs and following the links back to yours, which means a higher ranking.

Where do I find the time?

Here lies the problem, you’ve got a business to run, no time to sit down and tap away. So, how about getting someone else to do it for you? A professional blogger can produce the blog posts you need to succeed in your niche. Telling everyone about your goods or services is vital for growth, especially in the current economic climate, and blogging is a must-have element in your marketing efforts.

The Bronze service consists of a professionally written article of around 4-500 words, which will come in an email that you can copy and paste into your blog. If you don’t have a blog we’ll set one up and do it for you.

The Silver service consists of the benefits of Bronze plus setting up a social media presence if you don’t already have one and posting links back to your blog site.

The Gold Service is the most intensive; it consists of the elements included in Silver and Bronze but also takes on the workload of trawling through other blogs and commenting on them as discussed above. Often time-consuming, often laborious, yet it is vital to building your audience.

Mobile Recruitment Demand Outstripping Supply

Mobile recruitment website technology has been available from website design companies like Zero-One Design for more than a year, and with a growing interest in mobile browsing by jobseekers, why aren’t recruitment firms keeping up?

Mobile recruitment is ever so slowly catching on. Every recruitment agency needs a website, that’s a given, but with the unprecedented forward strides in mobile technology coupled with changing browsing habits, they need to consider their mobile strategy with a view to including a mobile compatible version of their site.

Technology seems to be perpetually gathering pace, remember the home computer is only a fairly recent invention yet the PC is already outdated with powerful laptops being far more convenient and taking up less space. It doesn’t end there as laptops are too cumbersome to carry around; netbooks are lighter and are sufficiently powered enough for business trips or to take on holiday. Netbooks in turn are being replaced by Smartphones and Tablets which it seems are improved upon month-on-month. Where will it end? 3G implants?

In January, on his blog Recruiting Future, Matt Alder insisted that 2011 was not going to be the year for mobile recruitment to take off, but he added: “…I believe that not only is recruitment going to go mobile but also that the job seekers out there are already demanding it.” His claim is reinforced by statistics: online recruiting research lab Potentialpark conducted a survey of 30,000 job seekers around the world and analysed the mobile recruitment presence of more than 350 top employers in the U.S., Europe and Asia; they found 19% of job seekers use their mobile phones and tablets for career-related purposes, add to that 50% admitted that they could imagine doing so, the problem is that a mere 7% of employers have a mobile compatible jobs board and only 3% have a mobile job app. (Source: Mashable)

Press Releases are a very simple and effective, yet often disregarded tool for getting exposure for your business. There a number of benefits to be had by using a well-crafted and optimised press release, in this article we will look at some of these benefits and see how they can increase your companies’ online presence.

Increasing the amount of traffic to your blog or website with a great press release

What? You don’t have a blog? The web-log is a vital component in the struggle for recognition. There are millions of voices online all vying to be heard; although most of them don’t have a lot to say that would hold the interest of anyone outside their immediate family or circle of friends, there are businesses, some of them your competitors, who are pushing themselves to the top of the business heap by telling the world about their products or services. They are doing this by blogging. The question is: why aren’t you?

You have to get the message out, tell the world about your company, what you offer, what difference you will make to your readers’ lives, your products, your services, how their enjoyment will be enhanced or the pain of their problems can be solved by what it is you are offering! How are they supposed to know what you offer if you don’t tell them? That is why you should be blogging.

As I mentioned earlier, there are millions of bloggers out there, writing billions of blogs, how will people find yours? By telling them it’s there; by issuing a press release. The world is hungry for news, it can’t get enough, readers want to know what’s going on and the internet has made that easier than ever before. There are free press release websites on the internet where you can release news about your company, your staff, your products or services in the same format a journalist would use in newspapers. This press release can contain links not only to your blog, but to your company website. Journalists pick up your press release, people read your press release, they want to know more so they follow the links to your blog and your company website and all of a sudden yours is not a lonely voice in the wilderness.

Increasing your visibility with a great press release

People will read it if it is written the right way. If a press release is written with an attention to detail people will want to read it and your visibility will increase. You have to keep in mind your target audience:

Journalists and other websites: there is a demand for newsworthy stories; if a journalist doesn’t meet that demand they won’t get paid. If they can’t find their own stories they go to press release websites and use what they find there. Now, it’s important to remember that they are busy (some of them lazy) and have to meet deadlines, therefore they don’t want to spend time going through your press release correcting spelling and grammatical errors; they are more likely to reject your news and move on to the next snippet. And that next snippet could have been written by your competitor!

The public: These are, after all, your potential customers, the life-blood of your company. They won’t read it if it doesn’t capture and hold their attention. Make them read on; like a novel, write it so they have no choice but to carry on reading until the end. Make them want to find out more about your company, your products or services.

Spiders: “You fool!” I hear you cry, “Spiders can’t read.” Ah, but they can, and they do. Search engines send out these “spiders” to crawl over everything on the internet (is that why it’s called the worldwide web? Ouch…sorry about that) sending back information on the content to the search engine database and follow the links provided to see what’s there. In this way the search engines rank websites according to relevance based on what search terms people use. A well optimised press release that uses the most relevant keywords is most likely to be found.

The best press release will read pleasingly for, and meet the demands of all of the above.

Building your brand with a great press release

Tell them, introduce yourself, say “I’m here, this is what I do” and more importantly “This is what I can do for you.” Let’s be honest, your customer is asking:” What’s in it for me?” They’re not going to buy from you or employ your services to do you a favour. So tell them, convince them that they absolutely cannot get by without what you have to offer.

You have competitors obviously, but their influence will wain as your star rises. Be the brand that the customer thinks of when they need whatever it is your niche provides. For example, people don’t do the vacuuming, they do the Hoovering, even if they are using a different brand of vacuum cleaner, they still refer to it as “the Hoover”. Therefore, unless they are shopping for a particular brand such as Dyson, it is Hoover that springs to mind when anyone is browsing for a new vacuum cleaner. Brilliant!

To achieve this you have to put yourself at the forefront of people’s minds and the best way to do that is to embed your brand in their subconscious with advertising, this starts with a GREAT press release.

Become an expert with a great press release

For every subject you can name, for every product available, for every niche market there are experts. They are the people we turn to for advice, even over that of our peers. They are the ones in the know, almost God-like in stature they gaze benignly down on us mere mortals from their lofty perches. Rubbish! You know who they are? They are the ones who talk the most and talk the loudest on any given topic. That’s all. They have set themselves up as experts and people follow what they say.

Ask yourself this… what do they know that you don’t already know about your niche market? Probably not much – if anything. So why are they experts? You should be asking yourself: WHY AREN’T I? Well, you can be. You can generate authority and credibility with a great press release, you have knowledge that other people lack so you should be telling others while at the same time indirectly promoting your product or service. A great press release will announce your expertise to an audience who want to know what you know – TELL THEM!

REMEMBER: If people regard you as the number one authority in your field then they will come to you first!

Applying SEO to make a great press release

As you probably know already, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. For any copywriter who is composing online content, THE most valuable skill. Remember the image of those little spiders, their tireless little legs following links to and from the millions of websites, skittering across endless blurb? SEO is about giving those little critters the most information possible, making it easy for them to read and understand.

By cramming in a certain keyword or phrase, the keyword or phrase that people are most likely and most frequently using as a search term, as many times as possible, while still retaining a readable sentence structure for a human audience.

By embedding anchor text links in the body of your press release, you can get quality backlinks. Search Engines such as Google will love you for that and you will rank higher. And that’s what it is all about!

Keeping the world informed with a great press release

Now you know, get the word out there. Tell them and keep telling them. What’s stopping you?
“I don’t know what to write about.” Write about you, your company, your product or service. Make announcements about new products or services, special offers, your website, your new customer, your members of staff.

Give it a really great headline that will make people sit up and take notice, then make it newsy (IS THAT EVEN A WORD?). Newspapers turn just about anything into a national crisis:

Sam Roman's album due for launch

Sam Roman is a singer song writer from north London and his debut album "Born to be King" is due for release very soon. Tracks from the album include 'Gone, Lonely man, Nobody, Man on the moon' and more great tracks.
Sam's comments on the album were "I make easy listening music with meaningful lyrics and old school melodies. It sounds like all the great music that I listened to growing up and that is what we intended. I used to call myself a Singer/Storyteller''.

Hucknall Town FC Launch New Website

August 2010 saw the re-design and launch of the new website for Evo-Stik Premier Division side, Hucknall Town FC.

Their new website is fully updateable, including details of all club news, club events, fixtures, match reports, player profiles, club history and other club information.

The website also includes numerous banner advertisement spaces, allowing Hucknall Town FC to earn their own advertising revenue from the website.

Zero-One Design also support Tamworth FC and Atherstone Town FC
